Your carefully crafted Power Automate flows? Throttled. Your Azure Logic Apps? Blocked. Your custom plugins? Returning errors faster than you can say "Service Protection API Limits."
We've all been there.
Your integration is running smoothly. Users are happy. Everything works perfectly in UAT.
Then you go live.
And suddenly: HTTP 429 - Too Many Requests
Your carefully crafted Power Automate flows? Throttled. Your Azure Logic Apps? Blocked. Your custom plugins? Returning errors faster than you can say "Service Protection API Limits."
The First Time Is Always the Hardest
The worst part? You don't even know this thing exists until it hits you.
No warning. No gradual degradation. Just a hard wall at 6,000 requests per 5 minutes per user. Or 52,000 per organization per 5 minutes. Or one of the other three limits Microsoft quietly enforces.
You scramble through documentation. You dig through Community forums. You open a Support ticket titled something like:
"Service Protection API Limits Increase Request" (or the fancy name: "Throttle Exemption Request")
And here's the kicker: The solution is simpler than you think.
What I've Learned After Hitting This Wall Multiple Times
✅ Document your patterns: Microsoft Support wants to see proof — API call volumes, business justification, architecture diagrams.
✅ Optimize first, request later: Implement retry logic, batch operations, and caching. They will ask what you've done before granting exemptions.
✅ Know the process: Expect 3-7 days for review. Plan ahead — don't wait until production is on fire.
✅ It's not just about limits: Sometimes the real issue is inefficient code making 10x more calls than needed.
Once you've been through it once, the next time feels almost trivial. But that first encounter? Brutal.
And Then There's the Other Surprise...
Oh, and let's not even talk about what happens when your environment grows to 100GB... 200GB... 700GB and you realize you're paying €40 per GB in storage overages.
But I'll save that story for another day. 😅
💬 Have you ever hit the API throttle wall in Dynamics 365 or Power Platform? What was your "aha moment" when you figured it out?
Let's help others avoid the 3AM panic we've all experienced 😎
